History has a habit of repeating itself, and so it was with the arrival of Freelander in 1997. Once again, a Land Rover product redefined its sector of the market - in much the same way as the launch of Discovery had taken the large leisure sector by storm.
The birth of Freelander
Freelander was revealed to the world and to widespread critical acclaim in September 1997 at The Frankfurt Motorshow. It was to launch Land Rover into a new sector of the 4x4 leisure market and expand the brand´s appeal beyond traditional 4x4 buyers.
Taking the high ground
Within a year, Freelander´s sales more than doubled and it became the biggest selling 4x4 in the UK. Its wide span of capability, from car-like handling to authentic Land Rover off-road ruggedness, proved irresistible to buyers. From the start, Freelander offered innovative technology in a straightforward form. Technology like Hill Descent Control – perfectly judged to give all drivers the confidence to explore the legendary off-road capabilities of a Land Rover. Further extending its appeal was the breadth of choice available - three distinctive body configurations in the practical 5 door Station Wagon and the sporty 3 door in Softback or Hardback versions, and with a choice of either petrol or diesel engines.
V6 power
In 2001, Land Rover announced a new Freelander model range, featuring a V6 engine, a new and much improved turbodiesel engine, a new automatic CommandShift™  transmission and extensive improvements throughout the range.
A sporting arrival
In 2004, the new Sport range has added a fresh dimension to the Freelander range. With a lowered, uprated suspension set-up and 18" wheels, they blend sporty dynamics with the highest levels of driver and passenger comfort.
